2016 Sherwood Award Winner
Graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with his BS degree and from West Texas A&M with his MS degree. He started coaching in Borger as the DB’s coach and head track coach. He moved from Borger to take the same position in New Braunfels, Tx before returning to Borger as the head football coach. Borger had one of the smallest enrollments in 1-AAAA yet Henderson produced playoff teams four of his last six years he was there. The Bulldogs farthest advancement was to the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual state champions from Brownwood. The next 23 years were spent at Lubbock Coronado High School. Coronado had only six winning seasons before he arrived then had eleven playoff appearances with four Regional/Area Championships under his leadership. As the athletic coordinator for Coronado, the school was also the strongest athletic program from 2006-2010 in the now-defunct 10 team 2-5A. Besides the coaching awards Henderson was also named teacher of the year three different times. Now he is the head football coach at Wayland Baptist University. The Pioneers started football five years ago and are looking for their first conference championship this year.
Coach Henderson’s partner in all of this is his wife Karen. They have been married for 42 years and have four married children and four grandchildren. The success he has had stems from the strong support Karen has always given.
“There is no greater reward for a coach than to see his players achieve their goals in life and know you had some small part in the success of that endeavor.”
