2023 Sherwood Award Winner

Ron Mayo was a 1980 graduate of New Deal High School, where he was named All State 1st Team Center, and All State 1st Team Linebacker. He attended West Texas State University in 1980 were he played football from 1980 – 1984. While at WT he joined the ROTC program and graduated as an officer in the United States Army. Coach Mayo also met his wife Kristi at WT, they have 3 children, and a son-in-law – Mikal Mayo, Morgan & Josh Tuz, and Garrett Mayo. 

Ron’s Army experience began right after college were he was a very successful Platoon Leader, Company XO, Company Commander, and an Airborne Ranger. 

He began his coaching career at Hamlin High School, then had stops at Euless Trinity, and finally New Deal. Where he was the Athlete Director and Head Football. While at New Deal his coaching record was 154 – 45. His teams made the play-offs 14 times out of the 17 years he was there, winning several District, Bi-District, Area, and Regional Championships.

1997 – South Plains Coach of the Year

2006 – Sports Express Football Coach of the Year

2010-2013 – THSCA Board of Directors

2014 – Texas Tech National Football Foundation Coach of the Year

2014 – ASCO All Star Coach West Texas Football Clinic

Ron believed in preparing his players both mentally and physically. He instilled the belief that winning was very important, but the desire to win was the most important. After 27 years of coaching, Ron retired from coaching and had several job opportunities to work in the oil field but when the oil company went bust, he was able to return to New Deal where he continues to support and work with students, wherever he is needed as a truant officer, bus driver, and administrative assistant.
